Grace Nell Hewell Georgia Art Pottery Face Jug Vintage 2000 Southern Folk Art Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage folk art pottery head or face jug by the Georgia artist, Grace Nell Hewell. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This piece of southern folk art has lots of relief and texture. The nose, eyes, cheeks, chin, and ears protrude from the pot, and the detailed teeth add whimsical interest. This handled pot has a streaked and spotted, greenish-brown frogskin glaze, with areas of blue and white. It measures approximately 6 3/4 inches tall, 5 1/2 inches long, and 4 3/4 inches wide. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 15.4 ounces. This would be a fun addition to a collection of American art pottery. Identification This vintage piece has incised markings beneath, "Grace Nell Hewell 4-2-2000." Hewell, of Georgia, was well-known for her whimsical pottery. This pot is from the northern California estate of a collector of southern folk art. Condition This jug looks great overall, with fine crazing and no cracks or post-production chips. It has light wear. As made, there is some roughness and missing glaze to the bottom side edges, with some grinding marks, where the dripped glaze stuck to the kiln. Elsewhere, the glaze has some rough/bubbled texture, also as made. There is a small, round, glazed-over indent to the lower forehead. The rustic, primitive nature is as made and as intended by the artist. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1.
