Clay Dimensions: 2 1/4" Diameter 2" Height Quinchamalí Pottery One of the most traditional and iconic manifestations of Chilean craftsmanship is that developed in Quinchamalí, a town located between the Ñuble and Itata rivers, thirty-two kilometers from Chillán. Its pottery tradition was born in the Pehuenche and Mapuche cradle, resisted the colonial period and survived the new forms of rural life thanks to the talented hands and wisdom of grandmothers, mothers and daughters, who to this day perpetuate the craft of black pottery. Chili’s Quinchamalí and Santa Cruz de Cuca pottery is embedded in the mestizo cultural tradition of central Chile and is characterized by black functional and decorative objects with white accents, created using techniques dating back centuries. Potters sell their creations in their homes, at local stalls, at the Chillán Market and at craft fairs, as well as through intermediaries.
